It was the hottest summer day on record and Cynthia Waterson had a deep need to be connecting to the ocean rather than being laid up in a hospital bed grunting, sweating and cursing as she worked at bringing new life into the world. Deacon Bradley Waterson would make his grand entrance early enough in the day that just a few minutes after birth as she nursed her second son, Cynthia asked the nurses in all seriousness if she would be able to get back into the water that afternoon. Cynthia made her living as a professional surfer while husband Paul worked independently so the family could tote their two young sons around the world amongst the different shores that their mother surfed.
Growing up amongst the shores of different continents, Deacon would learn to swim before he could walk, being tossed into the water and learning instinctively, the option of swimming seeming much better then to sink. It was here that the young boy would develop his obsession with the ocean, learning to read the waves and inherit their calmness, donning a life vest and being sat on a board as soon as he could hold himself up, the joke throughout the years being that it was salt water that ran through his veins instead of blood. The young family constantly living in giddy anticipation for where the next swell would take them.
Tahiti, Hawaii, South Africa, Indonesia, Peru, New Zealand, Fiji, The Maldives were just some of the exotic places that the Waterson family would spend their time, salt water in their hair and sun on their skin. There was barely a moment that Deacon and his older brother Riley weren’t on a board in the ocean alongside their mother. It was quite clear how from an early age that Deacon was intent to follow in the footsteps of his mother, entering and winning many surf contests, some garnering trophies larger than the young boy. The ocean was the place where Deacon felt centered, the water, salt, sea and sand coming together to harness a sense of calm that he could not feel anywhere else.
In what would be the cruelest twist of fate, it would be the ocean, the thing that Deacon loved nearly more than anything that would end up crashing his whole world around him. As a teen, Deacon would spend the day surfing with friends and older brother Riley when tragedy would occur, as Riley set up to catch a large wave, Deacon and company sat around to watch, the elder Waterson brother not only fail to catch so called perfect wave but fumble off of his board and end up submerged under the water. When more than a couple of minutes had gone by without a resurface, Deacon knew that something was terribly wrong.
The loss of his brother was something that cut Deacon to the core and turned his previous love affair with the ocean into a deep seeded hatred for the vessel that took the life of his brother. It would be a long while before Deacon would go back to the beach and years before he would step foot into the water again. Even finding one place to settle started to make him feel anxious and he knew that a monumental change was something that was needed, and with a couple of friends on a whim moved to the states. Settling in Los Angeles was new and strange, but it was an adventure, the kind of thing that Deacon was always up for.
It was a joke, the first open call audition that Deacon attended, having lost a bet to his buddies over something that he barely remembers now days but knows that it was ridiculous. He went in thinking that he would go to appease the bet not get the role and walk out without disappointment, except that wasn’t what happened at all and Deacon walked away with his very first role, it wasn’t much but definitely enough to spark some interest that he hadn’t even known was there in the beginning. With the first role he was absolutely hooked and acting was beginning to do for Deacon what surfing once did.
